Rusty McCaw returns for Christchurch club

A decision on All Blacks captain Richie McCaw's involvement in the Super Rugby play-offs will be made early next week, coach Todd Blackadder says.

The veteran flanker survived his first 80 minutes of rugby since taking a seven-month sabbatical when he turned out for club team Christchurch against University on Saturday.

The 32-year-old loose forward's last match was the Test against England last December, but he survived a full 80 minutes unscathed as his team won 22-5.

McCaw, who admitted afterward to feeling rusty, is a possibility for the bench when the Crusaders continue their campaign for an eighth Super Rugby title.

The Crusaders booked a home playoff against either the Queensland Reds or South African side the Cheetahs with a 25-17 win over the Hurricanes on Friday night.

"It would be nice to be involved with the Crusaders, but that's a discussion I have to have," said McCaw, a 116-Test veteran and three-time world player of the year.

"If that turns out to be the case, playing next week, I don't see that being a problem. I'm sure it will be fine."

McCaw looked rusty at first, dropping the ball the first time it went his way, and confessed he had "heavy legs" for the last quarter of the game.
